Powerball players will be chasing a $6 million jackpot on Saturday after no ticket matched all the numbers needed to win Powerball First Division in Wednesday night’s draw.

The draw marked a significant milestone for Lotto NZ, with chief executive Jason Delamore describing it as “one for the history books” as it was the first Powerball draw to feature 14 Powerball numbers.

The revamped game launched with a starting jackpot of $5 million, up from $4 million under the previous format, and also produced a first when one of the four newly added Powerball numbers was drawn.

“It was a memorable moment to see one of the four new Powerball numbers drawn for the first time, with Powerball 11 coming out of the machine,” Delamore said in a media release.

While no player won Powerball First Division, 5720 players collected $12 each through the new Powerball Division 8 prize, which was introduced as part of the game’s overhaul.

The updated format offers bigger prizes in existing divisions and creates more winners through the new Division 8 category, although the odds of winning Powerball First Division have lengthened from one in 38.4 million per line to one in 53.7 million.

Three Lotto players each won $333,333 with Lotto First Division.

Strike Four was also not struck, meaning the jackpot will roll over to $400,000 for Saturday night’s draw.

Meanwhile, 13 Lotto players won $16,074 each with Lotto Second Division.

Lotto NZ said the locations where the winning tickets were sold will be released at 11am on Thursday to give winners time to check their tickets.
