Daughter stunned by family’s $5m Lotto windfall

Two families won more than $5m in Saturday's Lotto draw.

The daughter of a South Island Lotto-winning family did not believe her parents when they told her about the more than $5 million prize they had just landed.

Another family also won more than $5m in Saturday’s $10m must-be-won jackpot.

The jackpot rolled down to division two, with two families, one from the bottom of the North Island and the other from the top of the South Island, sharing the winnings.

The first to claim were a Richmond family syndicate of parents and their adult children.

The family, who wish to remain anonymous, were at lunch when the dad remembered there was a ticket to check.

“... I logged in and watched the draw on the app,” he said.

“The numbers just kept coming.”

The couple told their daughter, who did not believe them.

“She said, ‘Nah it’ll only be $5000 or something, give me a look,’ and took the phone from me.”

“There was a lot of shrieking when we all realised it was real,” the mum said.

The extended family said they were thinking of using the winnings to pay off mortgages or purchase new homes.

The second winners were a Wellington family who discovered their new $5,027,676 fortune on Sunday evening.

“We were on the sofa when I checked the ticket. When I heard the winning music, I looked at my wife and said, ‘Oh my god, we won.’

“She didn’t believe me at first, and to be honest I had doubts too, because we hadn’t matched all six Lotto numbers.”

The man said he then found out the prize rolled down after looking online.

“It was such a shock, all I could say was ‘what the heck?’”.

The couple struggled to sleep that night and have not yet decided what they will do with their win.

“We’re going to take some time to figure it all out. It still doesn’t feel real,” he said.

Lotto said the families are now part of history, becoming the final winners of the 10-ball Powerball game before the new 14-ball version began last Sunday.

The first draw under the new game will take place tonight.
