Motorists travelling on State Highway 2 north of Katikati are being advised to expect delays as a major road rebuild gets underway this week.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said work near Woodland Rd will begin today, and is expected to take about nine weeks to complete.

The project will start with drainage works before crews move into the main road rebuild, the roading agency said in a media release.

The work involves removing the existing road surface and reconstructing it layer by layer to renew the road and extend its lifespan.

Most of the work will be carried out during the day between 6.30am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday, although some night work may also be required.

Lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place throughout the project, with motorists advised to allow up to 10 minutes extra travel time when passing through the area.

A temporary speed limit of 30km/h will remain in place while work is underway, including outside construction hours.
