Icy BOP roads warning

Bay of Plenty drivers are urged to take extreme care on the roads this weekend after icy conditions contributed to two vehicle accidents yesterday.

Just slow down and drive to the conditions, says senior sergeant Ian Campion, head of the Western Bay of Plenty strategic traffic unit.
The accidents yesterday were caused by ice on the top of the Kaimai Ranges and on State Highway 36, near Te Matai Road.
The Kaimai accident was caused by black ice. A driver overtaking a towed boat in a passing lane struck black ice, hit the boat and then rolled his vehicle.
The driver on State Highway 36 hit ice and went into a ditch.
He wasn't speeding, just driving too fast for the conditions, says Ian.
We experienced these conditions last year and the year before. On State Highway 36 it's likely there will be ice on the road over the weekend. There are white-out frost conditions on both sides of the road and also in the paddocks.
In similar icy conditions last month a driver was stopped at 128 kmh.
These are the types of people who actually crash, says Ian.
In the last frost there was one crash that wasnít related to speed. A patrol car was present when it happened. The driver was doing everything right and lost control on ice but the damage was minimal and he was able to carry on.
