A Waikato man had a lucky escape this morning after the ute he was driving flipped on its roof near the summit of the Kaimai Ranges, trapping him for 20 minutes.
He was the only occupant of the vehicle. Two fire engines were called to the scene at about 8.30am this morning to help free the man.
The crushed ute on the Kaimai Ranges was pulled upright after it flipped on its roof early this morning. Leaked oil spilled down the windscreen.
Motorists heading over the Kaimai Ranges faced delays as the southbound lane on the Matamata side was closed.
Police say the man was taken by ambulance to a Matamata medical centre with moderate neck injuries.
Senior constable Gavin Bennett was at the scene and says the male driver was heading towards Tauranga when the crash occurred.
Gavin says the ute was attempting to overtake a truck towing a boat when it hit a patch of black ice.
'He lost control, slid to the right of the road, tried to correct himself but then ended up crashing into the side of the boat and then rolled over,” says Gavin.
Police say the ute's crushed roof wedged the man in the vehicle and his head went through the right rear passenger window.
Motorists travelling over the Kaimai Ranges on State Highway 29 or on Pyes Pa Road on State Highway 36 are cautioned about the heavy ice build up.
