Tauranga teen nabbed for 180km/h

A 16-year-old Tauranga teenager with a restricted licence was caught by police speeding at 180km/h in his parent's car.

The teenager was caught on May 29 at 10pm speeding along Tamatea Arikinui Drive with three passengers.
Police highlight the incident at a time when they are urging motorists to slow down and reduce their following distances behind other vehicles.
The teenager was travelling at 50km/h per second and if he had to stop suddenly, it would have taken 257 metres to completely stop, according to police.
Sergeant Lester Polglase from the Western Bay of Plenty strategic traffic unit says it takes years of experience to handle a car at speed.
'Having a driver's licence does not mean you are a good driver, it just means you are allowed to drive,” says Lester.
Police referred the teenager to the youth court.
