Kaimai fat spill havoc

A fat spill on State Highway 29 in the Kaimai Ranges at the weekend left Western Bay of Plenty motorists facing a slippery, treacherous journey.

A truck coming over the Kaimai ranges towards Tauranga on June 6 spilt tallow, a processed form of animal fat, over the road up the Waikato side of the ranges.
Tauranga police say the spill caused a collision on the Waikato side of the Kaimai Ranges on June 6 between a vehicle heading up the ranges and a vehicle going down.
The driver involved in the collision heading up the hill was injured in the crash and taken to Tauranga Hospital.
The area of SH 29 from the bottom of the Kaimai Ranges to the summit on the Waikato side was closed for several hours.
