Traffic light outage ‘an issue’

Tauranga City Council is working to repair what has become a daily issue - the traffic light outage at the intersection of Cameron Road and Elizabeth Street.

The lights went out twice today, and have been reported out at least once a day since the start of the week.

The traffic lights at the corner of Cameron Road and Elizabeth Street have experienced outages since July.

Callers to the 0800 SunLive news hotline say the lights have been going out continuously for some time now.

Tauranga City Council transportation manager Martin Parkes says there has been an issue with them for the last couple of weeks.

'We initially thought it was a cable issue and we have done some work on that to upgrade certain parts of the system.

'But it now appears there is a systems fault somewhere, which we are currently working on to put right.”

He says to fix the problem the software that operates the light's system needs to be re-written.

'That may take another few days to resolve. In the meantime we are monitoring that section via our traffic cameras here at the Council.

'So we will be watching traffic movements and safety in the area.”

Martin is warning motorists that the lights may fail again in the next few days while the issue is resolved.

PATTERN EMERGES

You would think that if it was happening on a daily basis that someone would notice that and think .. perhaps there is something 'else' wrong than just putting the plug back in DUH! Council of course is living up to every expectation and indeed has reached the zenith of possibilities achievable from within.

Just thinkin'

Roundabouts don't have software failures.

All used to be good

then along came a new building, which created traffic delays for ages, while commuters weaved in and around contractors, now the lights which have been on the blink for at least a month now, hell why do a job properly the first time, when you can write yourself a meal ticket, by having to keep going back to change a bulb, a dam joke really.

BEGS THE QUESTION?

How many Councilors does it take to change a traffic light bulb ?

Another Thought

The local constabulary used to be available in when these events happened. I have not seen a police person doing "points duty" for some years. Are they now not trained to direct traffic as this is such a rare event, or have the drug lords priority over traffic safety?

There's the problem...

They've been reported as playing up for a long time but Mr Parkes thinks a long time is a couple of weeks. Be comforted by the fact that they're watching in the council building. How long have the lights been there, to need the software being re-written all of a sudden? It's more likely someone has done something to them and caused a fault.

Software??

Software doesn't just go wrong when it was previously working fine. That leads me to believe it's hardware, i.e. that new building has damaged a cable, or new cable as a result of the new building has been incorrectly connected. Don't blame it on "software" and expect me to pay for it - whoever owns the new building is liable and I expect Council to act on my behalf and make them cough up.

Whats wrong

How does anyone know whats wrong with the lights until we've had a consultants report! Where's the Environmental Impact Report first - perhaps the lights don't need to be fixed at all.

What about the road works on the toll road?

The Council shouldn't be charging tolls while all this is happening as my car was a mess after driving through it. Also what is with all the cones taking up parks in Grey Street? Parking is already diabolical.

More like someone has nothing else to do ... hmmm what can I "create" so as I have something to do and get to spend a lot of money doing so.

The nothing else to do aspect comes in with the new parking regs released today (and reported elsewhere). Where, if you've parked somewhere to the maximum length of permitted time, you must move from that parking spot and not return to it or another space with the same time restriction, if it's within 50m of where they were originally parked or within 30 minutes. There is something wrong with minds that dream up schemes like that. Perhaps Murray Guy will browse by and comment on it.
