Thrills, spills and mechanical ills

Speedway fans were treated to a fireworks extravaganza at Baypark Speedway last night as well as the usual thrills, spills and mechanical ills of the motorsport.

Following last year's fireworks cancellation, Speedway manager Roger Bailey is thrilled the pyrotechnics display went ahead and says it was bigger and better than ever.

Roger says fans were also treated to a lot of action on the track, with a number of mechanical ills making for an interesting night.

Brent McClymont's saloon suffered engine failure in the pre-race warm up and last minute problems meant Brent Emerson 7M just completed his Lovelady Mustang Super Saloon in time for the feature race, but componentry failure put him out early in the race.

Stock Car drivers got straight into action in the first heat with 4M Peter McIntyre being turned around on the opening lap, recovering quickly to re-join at the back of the field.

Karl Daniel 23M won the stock car feature from 29M Ryan Hunt and 35M Joseph Carter.

Roger says the closeness of the racing was evident by the amount of wheel banging occurring across the major classes, with a number of top contenders dropping down the field after bent steering componentry affected car speed.

A slippery track played havoc during the first Mini Stock heat with a number of the young drivers spinning out.

As the track dried, lap times dropped with 42M Trent Amrein winning victory over 43m Jason Gillon second and 81M Sam Waddell.

It was a night for the girls with 75M Michelle Wymer winning the saloon's feature after a close tussle with opening night feature winner 272M Chis Cowling, who finished in second place with fellow Tauranga ITM team mate Dan Corrin in third.

Dan's car was back on form showing great speed after a one wheel ride between turns three and four and a subsequent heavy landing forced it into retirement during the opening night.

Troubles plaguing 88M Gavin Dyer's campaign last season appear to have gone with Gavin running a fast pace to win the Super Saloon Feature.

Russell Donavan who placed second while visiting driver 63H Nigel Moat came in third.

Those who turned up the see the Sprint Cars and visiting American-based driver 11USA Peter Murphy were not disappointed, says Roger.

Peter struggled in the first heat but came from the back to third position in heat two. After opting to start from the back again in the feature, he moved into second place within a few laps of the 25-lap feature.

6M James Dahm was not going to give up first position without a fight and a battle developed between the two.

Much to the crowds delight, it was Peter who made his way to the front by lap 16 and pulled clear of the field while James retired with fuel issues.

Local Rodney Wood came through in second place, just in front of 14M Brad Tyrell, having his first run at Baypark this season.

The next meeting at Baypark is on Saturday, November 17 and will feature the first round of the La Z boy Saloon Car series and the Production Saloon invitation.

Traffic control

We took our children on Saturday night, had a great time watching the speedway, and the fireworks display was one of the best I've seen. However the traffic control afterwards was abysmal, waited at least 20min to get out! Poorly managed, and was a bad taste left after such a great night
