One person is dead following a crash in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Police have confirmed the death after a single vehicle crash this morning on Clarke Road, Te Puna.

The crash was reported shortly after 5.30am. 

"The road is closed on Clarke Road / SH2 and Clarke Road / Te Puna Station Road while emergency services attend," says a police spokesperson.

"People are advised to avoid the area.

"The Serious Crash Unit is at the scene and an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway."
