Police are making inquiries into the circumstances of a fatal crash in Waikato on Saturday.

Police responded to a single-vehicle accident in Waikato on Saturday evening.

"The crash occurred shortly before 5.30pm on State Highway 26 between Te Aroha and Paeroa," says a police spokesperson.

"One person died at the scene."

SH26 was closed between Paeroa-Tahuna Rd to Rawhiti Rd following the crash with diversions in place.

Southbound traffic: right on Paeroa-Tahuna Rd, left on Tautiti Rd, straight through Ngutumanga Rd, rejoin SH26. Northbound traffic: in reverse.

The road is now open.

"Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."
