One person is dead and two others have been injured following a serious crash on State Highway 29.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on SH29, at the Waikato end of the Kaimai Range.

"The two-vehicle crash occurred at around 3.15pm, just east of the intersection with Rapurapu Road," says a police spokesperson.

"The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.

"People are advised to avoid the area and delay travel."

Police can now confirm one person has died in a crash this afternoon.

A second person involved in the two-vehicle crash received critical injuries, and a third person received serious injuries.

The road remains closed.
