Papamoa's Derrin Gordon believes her grocery budget will stretch further now a second supermarket is being built in the area.
Foodstuffs, the parent company of Pak'n'save and New World supermarkets, has announced construction of a Pak'n'Save in Papamoa later this year.
Papamoa resident Derrin Gordon with her children on the site construction will start later this year on Papamoa's second supermarket.
The only supermarket currently in Papamoa is a Woolworths store. The new PakíníSave will be on the corner of Domain Road and Gravatt Road near the Fashion Island shopping complex.
Papamoa residents have been anticipating the supermarketís construction for at least five years, saying it will offer greater competition and cheaper prices.
Derrin is a solo mother of five and says although it could be another year before the supermarket opens, she is happy Foodstuffs has announced a construction date.
"It's been a long time coming and a long time talked about it. They have been talking about a Pak'n'Save ever since I moved to Papamoa.
We are hugely in need of another supermarket. A Pak'n'Save would offer a considerably cheaper option compared to the one other supermarket in the area," says Derrin.
She also says waiting times at the current Papamoa supermarket are another reason a second supermarket is needed.
"There are times we have to wait 30 minutes to get to the front of the queue. You can never just duck in and duck out at that supermarket," says Derrin.
She says an average shop for her at the Woolworths supermarket in Papamoa will take her 40-50 minutes but half of that is spent in a queue.
Foodstuffs Auckland general manager of Property Strategy Angela Bull says the outcome is exciting for Papamoa residents.
"We have received a lot of support from the Papamoa community for this Pak'n'Save. We are very pleased to confirm we will start construction on the site towards the end of this year and the PakíníSave will be open in the latter part of 2010."
