Devon Conway's return from injury has lasted just two balls against Bangladesh.
The Black Caps opener made a duck for the New Zealand XI against the touring side in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday in a two-day game that acts as a warm-up for Bangladesh ahead of two tests versus New Zealand.
Conway was named last week in the Black Caps squad for the series, with the first test starting in Mount Maunganui on New Year's Day.
He and Neil Wagner were also included in the NZ XI selection to give them some matchplay, with Conway being sidelined for six weeks with a broken bone in his hand suffered in NZ's Twenty20 World Cup semifinal win over England.
However, Conway was dismissed by the second ball he faced at Bay Oval when caught by Liton Das off the bowling of AJ Chowdury as the host side slumped to 8-3 after Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl following a rain delay.
'I'm really looking forward to getting back into some competitive cricket and hopefully I'm passed fit to play,” Conway said last week.
'I've just started batting again and testing out my hand so I'm hopeful of making my return for the New Zealand XI. There's nothing like a match situation to really test it out and help build some confidence.”
New Zealand will meet Bangladesh in the first test starting on January 1 at Bay Oval, with the second test beginning at Christchurch's Hagley Oval on January 9.
Black Caps squad: Tom Latham (captain), Devon Conway, Will Young, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell, Rachin Ravindra, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult.
