One person is dead following a crash on State Highway 1, in the Bay of Plenty Police District.

The crash involved a pedestrian and truck on SH1, just north of Tūrangi at about 9.45pm on Sunday.

Diversions were in place, as the road was closed in both directions, says a police spokesperson.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash and enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing, says police.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

The road, which is geographically in the Waikato, but part of the Bay of Plenty Police's District, is reported to be open this morning.
