Motorists travelling the Desert Rd on Wednesday are being urged to take care, with snow expected to affect State Highway 1 for much of the day.

MetService has issued a road snowfall warning for the Desert Rd, valid from 9am to 5pm on Wednesday, September 23.

Snow showers are forecast to lower to around 800m during the morning and afternoon, with up to 1cm of snow expected to accumulate on the road at times.

Drivers are advised to be prepared for potentially hazardous driving conditions, reduced visibility and changing road conditions throughout the day.

Road users are encouraged to check the latest highway updates and weather forecasts before travelling through the area.
