Foodbank thrown lifeline

Tauranga Community Foodbank is being thrown a lifeline today, Tuesday June 16, just three days after its food supply was perilously close to running out.

Tauranga Community Foodbank chairperson Don Brebner is overwhelmed by the generosity of the Legacy Trust.

On Friday June 12, there was only enough to fill 20 more food parcels, says foodbank chairman Don Brebner.
By 2pm today, the foodbank will be given a significant contribution by Tauranga's Legacy Trust.
'On the supply side, we have never had rooms without some type of stock but last week the rooms were empty.”
'We had some supply of tinned fruit but you can't make a food parcel just out of tinned fruit,” says Don.
Tauranga City councillor Greg Brownless established the Legacy Trust, which recently donated $10,000 to the Bay of Plenty branch of Plunket after it was defrauded of $150,000.
Don is unsure of the exact amount to be donated, which will be presented at the foodbank by Greg and Legacy Trust trustee Bill Holland.
'Recently, we have had an average of 30 people a day seeking help from the foodbank and that means we had a really bleak outlook. This new generosity is overwhelming,” says Don.
He predicts the foodbank will distribute 7500 – 8000 food parcels in 2009 and will need to raise another $50,000 between now and Christmas.
