Votes to shape NZ markets

Two important votes have piqued the interest of major players in the New Zealand market this week.

The first, relating to dairy giant Fonterra's bid to change its ownership model by allowing the trading of shares, made plenty of headlines.

The second, over the Government's plan to sell minority shares of some state assets, scrapped through parliament last night by the slimmest of margins. The vote means shares in Mighty River Power are likely to be the first to be offered at the end of the year at attractive prices to create interest ahead of subsequent floats.

There's been word, too, that a retail bond may be offered by Z Energy, for a term of about 5-7 years.

The stronger than expected GDP numbers from last week have also caused quite a stir, but it would still seem relatively unlikely that interest rates will rise before 2013.

Abroad, China have made major concessions by relaxing foreign ownership rules, while the US market, which responded well after the expected result in the Greek election, will be keeping an eye on events at the Euro summit.
