A serious crash has closed State Highway 2 through Karangahake Gorge in both directions.

Early reports suggest three people are seriously injured.

Police have confirmed they were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash at around 3.15pm this afternoon.

A Police spokesperson says: "Karangahake Gorge will be closed for some time while emergency services work to clear the scene."

Diversions are in place at SH2 and SH26, SH2 and Orchard Road, and SH2 and Waitawheta Road.

"Motorists are asked to delay travel if possible or avoid the area," adds the spokesperson.
