SH2 reopens after two seriously injured in crash

UPDATED 4.15pm: State Highway 2 near Te Puna has reopened but heavy traffic remains following a crash this afternoon.

Two people have been seriously injured after their car crashed into a tree around 2.30pm, says a police spokesperson.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says traffic on the highway northbound is backed up to Waihi Road.

The traffic southbound heading towards Tauranga is backed up past Plummers Point Road in Whakamaramara, they say.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport agency is advising people to allow extra time for long traffic delays in the area to ease.

UPDATED 3.30pm: Two people have been seriously injured and State Highway 2 is closed following a crash near Te Puna.

Emergency services are responding to a crash that happened around 2.30pm near Clarke Road, says a police spokesperson.

A St John spokesperson says three ambulances and a manger responded to the incident.

Two patients have been transported to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition, says the spokesperson.

Earlier police stated incorrectly stated that a car and truck had collided, says a police spokesperson.

'Police can now confirm that a single car has crashed into a tree and its two occupants are in a serious condition.”

A witness to the crash says the car suddenly veered off the road at speed, hit the tree and bounced back onto the carriage way.

The police spokesperson says, 'We ask motorists to avoid the area if possible and to expect significant traffic delays".

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport agency is advising the following detours:

For eastbound traffic turn Left onto Te Puna Road, Right onto Te Puna Station road, Left onto SH2. For westbound traffic do the detour in reverse.

The detour is not suitable for HPMV.

'We ask motorists to avoid the area if possible and to expect significant traffic delays.”

Waka Kotahi NZTA says delays are likely in the area and diversions may be required.
