Police can confirm one person has died following a two-vehicle collision on State Highway 36, between Tauranga and Rotorua.

Police were alerted to the crash between a truck and a car at around 2.26am, near Pyes Pa Road.

The person died at the scene, says a police spokesperson.

"Police enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.

"The road is now open."
