Golf clubs across Tauranga and Auckland are joining forces to raise money for people affected by the Australian bushfires.

Over the next week, seven clubs will run tournaments from which all proceeds will be pooled and donated to the Australian Red Cross.

Tauranga Golf Course's Jim Cusdin says it was a bit of a mad scramble to organise the fundraiser.

'We were really surprised with how many people jumped on board straight away.”

There are around 100 people booked to participate on Saturday at Tauranga Golf Course.

Jim expects each club to bring in a minimum of $500 and hopes people will donate more than the $5 required to participate.

'By doing this we are involving the community and creating awareness that may motivate people to donate off their own backs.”

Each club will have prizes for the best player on the day and the top scorer across the competition will win one overall prize.

Organisers say they are continuing to come up with ideas to raise as much money as they can on the day.

The clubs hosting tournaments for the fundraising effort are Tauranga, Omokoroa, Waitemata, Muriwai, Maungakiekie, Akarana and Gulf Harbor.
