The high rise is designed to house a projected increase in students at the University of Waikato and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.
The polytechnic may run out of room to house the growing number of students, if a solution is not found otherwise, says Bay of Plenty Polytechnic CEO Alan Hampton.
Alan proposed the new development this year, which he presented to a Tauranga City Council steering committee.

He predicts the number of University of Waikato students attending the polytechnic will double in the next three to four years.
Full time students attending the polytechnic is predicted to increase by five per cent each year and
Alan says the polytechnic could run out of room unless another building is constructed.
'You can always lease buildings but that's not a long term solution, so this is really saying lets get our act together now because it's going to take the best part of three years for the development to be fulfilled,” says Alan.
