Memorial Park coastal pathway decision postponed

Tauranga City Council is postponing a decision on whether to continue with the next steps of the Memorial Park to city centre coastal pathway.

The proposed pathway, connecting Memorial Park and the City Centre via The Strand, has been identified as a key connection in city centre strategies and walking and cycling plans.

Earlier this year, benefits of the pathway were said to include providing a safe and flat walking and cycling connection and providing the ability to access and celebrate the water's edge.

The pathway was considered in 2007 as part of the Southern Pipeline project, however it was not progressed further. Read more here.

In yesterday's meeting, councillors heard that the next steps would include gathering sufficient information for the development of a business case, says a TCC spokesperson.

'This includes working with landowners to identify specific property issues and mitigation options, technical assessments, concept design options and project costing information.”

A decision is expected to be made at the next council meeting on August 27.

... "providing the ability to access and celebrate the water’s edge." What a load of BS! Don't we have enough 'waters edge' to celebrate without spending millions on this small stretch of quiet and peaceful foreshore! The road is just metres away with a good footpath! Cross this off your 'Wish List' TCC - we can't afford it!!

Once again Councillors don’t have the guts to make a decision. Just like the Mount track. Give me my voting papers.
