Council questioned over parking

Tauranga City Council wardens parking on the grass during peak hours in Mount Maunganui has angered some residents who think it is unacceptable behaviour.

An image submitted by a SunLive reader shows two parking meter warden cars parked on the grass on the corner of Marine Parade and Grace Avenue on Sunday, January 29.

The two TCC parking warden cars photographed on Sunday, January 29.

The reader told SunLive in an email that the cars were parked illegally and the two male parking wardens were patrolling both sides along the road along Mount main beach.

The reader goes on to say as there is no sign along that stretch of road for parking times, he assumes the wardens were targeting registrations and warrant of fitness.

'Both were writing out tickets when I saw them. Their cars were parked behind yellow lines and the small posts to keep cars off the grass. Unacceptable behaviour from officials I think.”

Tauranga City Council group manager customer services and environmental monitoring Peter Frawley says in the area where the Council cars have parked, there is no signage to prohibit parking on the grass verge, so the cars are not illegally parked.

'Obviously, I would have preferred our parking officers not to park here,” says Peter.

'Saturday was a very busy one at the Mount I understand and the parking staff would have been pressed to find a marked space in the Marine Parade area to resort to parking on this grass verge."

Peter says it is his intention to get a full explanation of the circumstances on Tuesday.

i saw them giving a ticket to a car who was parked rear first into a park on marine parade. if you have children and are unpacking gear from your car i would have thought that this was safer on such a busy day to be unloading on grass verge instead of right by road/cycle lane. but no. apparently it is illegal to be safe around here. thanks for the tip of being able to park on that grass verge it might come in very handy. oops how long until the signs go up?

didnt you no council is a law to them selves. it stinks. I bet if we parked on the grass like that they would have great delight in writing out a ticket.

More parking made available.

Good to see the TCC Customer Services manager clarify that those posts around the city do NOT mean "no parking". I'll ignore them from now on when looking for a car park.

Excellent - lots of new parks around the city

Next time I can't get a park in the CBD i'll be sure to go up on the verge somewhere... such as by the train tracks next to the waka on the strand and by the Domain. Thanks for setting the example TCC!

I have a question for the council, If you have two wardens working the same area, you would think they would come in the same vehicle,, to save parking, and fuel...!!!

TCC Please answer Yes, or No, a simple question.

Is it legal to park on any grass berm as long as there is NOT a sign forbidding it then, even when there are posts in position on the berm???

Not Right

Homeowners have to mow the grass verge, most pay particular care in maintaining the area. They pay rates on their property, the valuation of which is affected by the grass verge. The last thing that should be allowed is for all and sundry to park on the verge, killing the grass, compacting the topsoil, thus the grass is never ever able to sprout again. Bring in a bylaw to stop parking on grass verges, unless it is an emergency. A guy parked on our grass verge and when he left he knocked over our power box. The road is for cars not the footpath.

WooHoo . Now I have a lot more options for parking...Keeping this photo and article - just in case the parking vultures try and ticket me..."Whats good for the goose is good for the gander"

ticket

Posted on 30-01-2012 14:41 | By tonyb1

Well we have the picture so a ticket should be issued to those wardens for parking illegally Most employment contracts state the you are responsible for any fines incured whilst you are using the company vehicle, and why are they not on scooter like other country's have adopted to help reduce cost and greenhouse gases, oh hang on its TCC they dont follow rules, do as I say not how I do

PARKING

I am amazed so many people park on the grass anywhere in Tauranga and surrounds. In other cities they would automatically be ticketed - think of the revenue they could collect.....

Revenue collecting.

What peeves me most about this story is that apart from the Council being parked illegally....and there being no restriction in the area they were patrolling is that they were obviously revenue collecting beach goers and our tourists. I personally do NOT think it should be their job to check warrants and regos....let the transport dept do that.....Bloody shame isnt it....

ALLO ALLO Kenny had some little lambs and put them in a bucket ---------

Totally unacceptable. It was a Sunday so is someone seriously suggesting these pillocks were at work if not they are using TCC vehicles privately at TCC ratepayers cost plus FBT is payable.Personally I think they were on a holiday muffin break watching the National surfing. Strange the rules never appear to apply to TCC staff. The major surprise is that Mr Frawley is actually allowed to speak as he is usually muzzled in case true to form he puts the foot in it.Just think we have 500 wombles back at TCC HQ defending this sort of crap surely we could have a staff ream out and have what is left gainfully employed !!

Whoopydoo !

I hope these two idiots get a right dressing down by their boss. This is arrogance to the extreme. Why come in two cars ? Make them pay a maximum parking fine. I must admit I have queried this in the past and have been told parking wardens can park any where ! What a wonderful example TCC are setting for the rest of the populace. Bollocks.

Private Property

If I found items on my private property then that would make them mine...........

Lets face it..

Posted on 30-01-2012 20:31 | By claypole

this is a couple of staff being lazy and arrogant (minority at TCC?). Maybe take the cars away and give them push bikes to get around on. Personally , I agree with Jean Craven, vehicles should only be parked on roads in designated areas, anywhere else, ticket them, council, a new bylaw please and 2 push bikes!

wow

So why didn't those parking meter clowns travel to the mount by city council bus? God knows they sre empty enough. Or maybe like a lot of potential patrons, the times didn't suit , or maybe they just didnt't run that day like they didn't around the airport during the airshow

love it!!

TCC Brownshirts

Somebody should have wheel clamped them, or parked in the driveway in front and behind them. They were obviously in a frenzy - too excited and frothing at the bung to get writing out tickets to other people to be bothered finding a legal place to park some distance away. They should have the fines deducted from their wages - double - no - TRIPLE times over. In a way I feel sorry for parking wardens. Imagine how desperate or unemployable you would have to be to take on a job as a TCC parking warden.

Parking

Posted on 31-01-2012 11:11 | By crazysteed

if they can park their car on the grass behind bollards and a broken yellow line now surely, thats taken parking to far for a start but to read the Bay of Plenty times and TCC saying its ok to park there, and TCC say they were not in the wrong come on. Well i guess anyone can park on any ones lawns, thanks TCC you for showing us how and where to park Thanks you parking wombles

Would Yas all just...
