The Tauranga Boxing Club returned home from the 2019 North Island Golden Gloves with four Gold and a Silver medal.

Leading the way was Arafura Games Gold Medalist Ariana Nicholson, who won the female 69kg title after two hard fought bouts at the event in Taupo on the weekend.

First-up, she had a battle royal with Wellsford boxer Helen Paumoleuka, before earning the decision.

The gold medal decider was a rematch of her Arafura Games title fight, where she again conquered Pelea Fruean in another tough bout.

For the second year in a row, Ari was awarded the most scientific female boxer trophy.

Michelle Nuku faced a big challenge against Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Troy Garton in the 60kg final.

Michelle put on a brave performance, going toe-to-toe with the current national champion, before being on the wrong end of a close decision.

Henry Wilson made a stunning entrance into the sport of boxing, winning the novice Light Heavyweight division.

Wilson was stepping into the ring for the first time, when he defeated his opponent in a preliminary contest, before going on to emerge victorious from his semi-final and title deciding bouts.

The Te Puke resident backed-up his hard work in the gym, for Coach Chris Walker, since joining the Tauranga Boxing Club.

The two Cadet (12-14 years of age) boxers from the Western Bay of Plenty boxing gym, also both made successful debuts in the ring, winning novice titles.

Motekiai Huni defeated Kevin Hay from Rotorua in the 32kg division, with Te Kehu Kerr who lives in Maketu beating Novek Savieti in the heavyweight category.

The Tauranga Boxing Club Golden Gloves tally of seven wins from eight bouts matched last year's performance of four Golden Gloves titles.
