Motorists buying petrol in Rotorua are being pumped a better deal than in Tauranga where the price for 91 octane is as much as 16 cents per litre more.
Some petrol stations in Rotorua are selling the fuel for $1.959 per litre, but after Tuesday's five cents per litre price hike, the same fuel in Tauranga is $2.119.
Z Energy communications manager Jonathan Hill says Rotorua has probably the most vigorous and intense regional price competition in the country.
'From time to time there are different prices in different regions as the various companies compete with each other on prices in different parts of the country.”
Jonathan says since the summer holidays began price competition has been strong in Rotorua.
'What I would say is the people of Rotorua are benefiting from that and Rotorua is the exception rather than the rule.”
He says people in Rotorua should make the most of the discount because the amounts being charged there do not reflect the true price the product.
'There is some very strong discounting going on.”

Can someone enlighten me why I would pay 2 cents more at Shell (Z energy) station than a BP station. They are advertising that they are giving all this money to charity but isnt it us as the consumer giving it.

I undestand that those three petrol stations that are in the block just before the turnoff to the Blue and Green Lakes ( coming from Tga) have been at least 5 cents cheaper than hrer for a very long time !! Guess their owners are happy with a slightly smaller profit margin then ?? Good on them. Competition is best for the consumer all round

Why is petrol dearer here? Hmm wake up Tauranga you live in the rip of capital city of the world. Examples. I don't need to quote petrol you already know that. Spuds in Auckland $0.99 a kilo Tauranga up to $3.00 a kilo Shredded wheat in Tauranga $12 a pack. In Auckland $6 a pack ( where we buy ours) One leek Tauranga $3 Auckland $1. The herb Fennel Tauranga $28 a kilo Auckland $5.80 a kilo Too many more to list but I guess you get the drift Rates on a house with a Granny flat Tauranga, our case $999 on top of $4000 . Auckland larger more expensive house by 100s of thousands of dollars $3000 no extra rates for Granny flat . Tauranga is truly the rip off city of NZ and may be one of the worst rip off cities in the world. Alastair Bethlehem
