One person has died following the serious crash on State Highway 2 near Opotiki this afternoon.

Another person is in a serious condition, and two others have sustained moderate injuries.

The road is expected to be closed for some time.

The Serious Crash Unit will examine the scene.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

3.30pm

Emergency services are responding following a serious two-car crash on State Highway 2, near Opotiki.

Police were called about 3pm.

Initial indications are one person is critically injured. Three others are also understood to be injured.

The crash occurred near the Waioeka River Bridge, and traffic has come to a standstill in both directions.

The road is currently blocked and motorists are asked to avoid the area. There is no detour in place at this stage.
