The premier U14 Surf lifesaving event sees 857 athletes from 45 clubs across New Zealand competing for honours in both beach events (sprints and flags) and ocean (swim and board) races.

The first event of the day on Thursday was Beach Flags where Red Beach, Mt Maunganui and Maranui performed well in in both the male and female divisions.

The other finals for the first day of competition were in the Run Swim Run which saw great performances from the Omanu team with them winning three of the five age groups.

'We have been working to create a great team culture and have good coaching, management and support,” says Omanu's head coach Scott Bartlett.

'The well performed Omanu team picked up 9 medals on the first day of competition.”

The home teams finished the day leading the medal table with Omanu leading 5 points ahead of Mt Maunganui.

Bartlett's happy with his team 'the team performed well, we worked as a team and got some great results – but there are still three more days to go”.

Oceans' 19 continues tomorrow with sprint and board rescue events and concludes on Sunday.
