State Highway 2 is closed following an incident in Taneatua this afternoon.

The NZTA says due to an accident in the area, the road is closed between Taneatua Road and Station Road.

'Please delay your journey or use an alternative route.

'Please follow directions of emergency services.”

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says it appears that a police car has been written off.

"The bridge also looks to be damaged."

The road is closed until further notice.
