One person has died after a crash involving a truck and a car on State Highway 1.

It happened about 1km north of the town just before 4.30am, near Taihape.

"The road is closed and there are diversions in place at Hautapu Street and Goldfinch Street," says police.

"The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene."
