Helicopter hits power lines in South Waikato

UP DATE: 2.55pm The pilot of a helicopter has escaped injuries in a crash after hitting power lines.

It happened on State Highway 1 near Maroa Road, near Atiamuri, about 25 kilometres north of Taupo.

The fire service says the pilot is conscious and walking around.

He was the sole occupant of the helicopter.

There was a small fire near the crash site which has been put out.

The road is closed and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

EARLIER: Emergency services are responding to a incident on State Highway 1 near Maroa Road, near Atiamuri, where a helicopter has crashed after hitting power lines.

Police were called about 1.50pm.

Initial indications are no one is injured.

The road is not closed, however traffic management may be in place while emergency services work at the scene, which is off the road.
