UPDATED 10.04AM: The Police Serious Crash Unit is at the scene of a fatal two-vehicle crash in Waitomo.

The crash occurred on State Highway 4 at Te Mapara about 8.10am.

Two people from one of the vehicles died at the scene, says a police spokesperson.

"Three people from the second vehicle were airlifted to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries.

"Diversions remain in place."
