The Tauranga BMX club have already had a busy start to the year.

Nine riders from the club travelled down to Dunedin to compete the first event for the calendar year.

Team manager for the event Craig White says the club achieved great results from the event with all of their riders placing within the top ten.

The club has a wide age range of riders with competitors aging from 7 years old up to 40 years plus.

'Everything went really well. The weather was great on the Saturday and it got windy and wet on the Sunday for racing,” says Craig.

'One of our riders were unfortunate and got caught up in a crash in his final but otherwise the weekend went really smoothly.

'All the parents that went down to support were all really good within supporting the whole team and it was just a really good atmosphere for the Tauranga club.”

The next event for the Tauranga BMX club is this coming Saturday, when riders will be competing at the Oceania Continental Championship for an Oceania title and ranking.

Craig says this event is a big one that involves a lot of the New Zealand riders and a lot of the Australian riders as well.

'This is only the 2^nd or 3^rd time it's been held in New Zealand.

'The last time it was held here was three years ago.”

Craig says the Tauranga club has a large number of competitors competing this weekend.

Charlie Withington 7 Boys – 4^th Place (1^st time at South Island Champs)

Caleb White 9 Boys – 3^rd Place

Bruno Nemedi 10 boys – 1^st Place

Bruno Nemedi 8-12 Mixed Cruiser class – 1^st Place (beating riders 2 years older than him)

Thomas Lampaert 15-16 boys – 9^th Place (1^st time at South Island Champs)

Matthew Burns Elite Men – 6^th Place (1^st time at South Island Champs)

Jakub Bourke 17-24 Male 8^th Place (He had a crash and didn't finish) also 1^st time at South Island Champs

Cassie King 15-16 Girls – 4^th Place

Tayla Arnold 15-16 Girls – 5^th Place

Greg Hughes 35-49 Cruiser – 2^nd Place (1^st time at south Island champs)

The Cruiser class means the bike has bigger wheels than the regular 20” class.
