UPDATED 9.36AM: A large slip is blocking the State Highway 2, about 1km west of Murphy's Motor Camp.

Contractors are on site and are endeavouring to open the road mid afternoon, says the NZTA.

EARLIER:

State Highway 2 in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is closed this morning.

The NZTA is reporting a large slip is blocking both lanes of the highway near Matata.

"A large slip is blocking the highway approximately one kilometre west of Murphy's Motor Camp.

"Contractors are on site and are confident the highway will reopen in a matter of hours."

Motorists are advised to use an alternative route until further notice.
