A section of State Highway 2 through the Karangahake Gorge will be closed tonight.

The closure, which is between School Road and Waitawheta Road, is to allow asphalt resurfacing works from 8pm to 5am.

Motorists are being advised to allow additional time to their journey to travel the detour route.

The detour route

SOUTHERN DETOUR: SH2 (Waihi to Tauranga), SH29, SH24, SH27 (Matamata to Tatuanui), SH26 (Tatuanui to Paeroa) and vice versa.

NORTHERN DETOUR: SH25 (Waihi to Hikuai), SH25A, SH26 (Kopu to Paeroa) and vice versa.

Meanwhile, a section of State Highway 2 remains under stop/go traffic management following a large slip and rockfalls over the weekend, the NZTA reported on its Facebook page on Monday.
