Sevens’ teams named for qualification tournament

Both men and women will be taking to the field this weekend.

The Bay of Plenty Men's and Women's teams have been named to play in Saturday's Northern Region Sevens Qualification Tournament in Cambridge.

The Bay of Plenty Men's Sevens' team this weekend will be playing for pool position for the upcoming TECT National Sevens.

Head Coach Sean Horan says his team have prepared well over the past few weeks and has challenged the coaching group ahead of this weekend's selection.

'Our camp was a great platform for this group and the preseason tournaments have taught us a lot about our thoughts as a team, what style would suit us and what the opposition will bring. All the players have brought us a lot to think about regarding selection and who will best fit those roles. They have really put their hands up."

Horan highlighted it is a privilege for those selected to represent Bay of Plenty this weekend.

'This weekend provides an opportunity for the team to represent the Union and another opportunity for individuals to put their hands up. We want to see the players taking that ownership but also enjoying themselves out there on the field.”

The Bay of Plenty Women's Sevens side captained by Rebecca Kersten is a youthful side who will thrive off the challenge presented this weekend.

Head Coach Rodney Gibbs is aware of the challenge his side is presented with this weekend.

'We have a youthful group of girls who have continued to develop and have demonstrated consider talent over the last few weeks.

"But this weekend they will be tested by a number of talented and experienced opponents. They will need to step up to the challenge and deliver a consistent performance.”

Gibbs finishes by highlighting the importance of holding their focus regardless of the score board.

'The game of sevens can change instantly, we need to ensure as a team we are ready for that, maintaining our focus, completing the basics and playing with intent and purpose. If we do this right the result will take care of itself.”
