A man has died after suffering a medical event at Red Crater on the Tongariro Alipine Crossing.
Senior Constable Barry Shepherd says emergency services were alerted to the medical event at 8.40am when another person activated a personal locator beacon.
"The man's body has now been recovered from the mountain and a karakia has been held at the Mangatepopo Road end of the crossing.
"A rāhui has been put in place on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing until the morning of Tuesday, 27 November.
"The rāhui allows family and whānau to reflect in peace."
The matter is being referred to the coroner.
