Bay of Plenty's Joe Carter has helped bring it home again for Northern Districts in cricket's Ford Trophy one day competition.

Three days after playing a key role in the team's win over the Central Stags with an unbeaten century – including hitting a world record 43 off one over with his Bay teammate Brett Hampton – Carter has turned around a ticklish situation for his team and steered them to a win over Canterbury on Saturday at Hamilton's Seddon Park.

Carter, who only regained his spot in the ND team after an 18 month break two weeks ago for their washed out third round clash with Central in Nelson, entered the fray with the side teetering at 111 for four wickets, and half their overs gone in the chase of 252.

With still plenty of work to do to reach the target he went on to play the steadying hand his team needed, finishing not out on 45, and along with Hampton (37) and wicketkeeper-batsman Peter Bocock (28) got his team over the line with three wickets and nine balls to spare.

After holding Canterbury to 251 for seven in their 50 overs it was a stumbling start for the home side, who lost opener Henry Cooper with the total at 15 and Bay of Plenty's Dean Brownlie at 25.

Former Blackcap Anton Devcich and Daryl Mitchell followed, with only Nick Kelly of the top five turning a good start into sizeable runs, reaching 63.

For the second match on the bounce Carter came in at six in the order and delivered the recovery his team needed.

The win lifted them off the bottom of the table, over Canterbury, and up to 10 points, just two out of the playoff positions. With still four matches to play before the top three teams contest the finals they've given themselves a handy chance of being among the contenders.

Their next assignment is a return clash with Canterbury at Christchurch's Hagley Oval on Wednesday.

Ford Trophy round six match at Seddon Park Hamilton:

Canterbury - 251/7 in 50 overs (Devcich 3/55, Mitchell 2/59), lost to Northern Districts - 254/7 in 48.3 overs (Kelly 63, Carter 45 no, Hampton 37).
