Honours board entries early in Western Bay cricket

Just two weeks into the Western Bay of Plenty Cricket season and there are already three entries on the season honours board.

On Reserve Grade opening day, October 13, a Greerton Sikh XI batsman belted the first century of the new Western Bay season. Lovely Sandhu took control of his side's T20 encounter with Tauranga Boys' College, to post 110 not out of his team's 165/6.

And in successive weeks two rare as hen's teeth hat-tricks were taken. In week one, Mount Maunganui's Nathan Walker returned figures of four wickets at a cost of just 6 runs, including wickets in a row. Not to be outdone Greerton Sikh XI bowler LS Bhatti, who fires bullets down off just a couple of paces, also grabbed a hat-trick the following Saturday.

Week three, tomorrow, sees the nine Reserve Grade contenders start their pursuit of the Western Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade championship.

The Greerton Sikh XI will be chasing back-to-back first round titles. The Greerton Indian team have a good balance of batting and bowling but they face a big challenge first up meeting multiple Western Bay Reserve Grade champions Mount Maunganui, at Mount headquarters at Blake Park.

Former two-time McNaughton (Baywide) Trophy holders, R&A Sangha, could have a good contest with Tauranga Boys' College second eleven, on the grass at Fergusson Park. Aquinas College host the Singh CC side, Greerton square off with long-time rivals Cadets at Pemberton Park, while Reserve Grade titleholders Te Puke sit out the bye.

Greerton's B Grade side, who annexed both pieces of silverware on offer last season, enter the arena for the first time after drawing the bye last week. They have a short trip down Fraser Street to play Tauranga Boys' College at Nicholson Field.

The Western Bay second echelon competition is very much an unknown quantity this season, with newly constituted Papamoa Cricket Club entering three teams in the B Grade race. There will be a Papamoa club derby at Alice Johnson Reserve, with Papamoa Wanderers playing newly-formed PapaOMA's.

Papamoa Tangaroa meet long-time B Grade contenders Grasshoppers at Mitchell Park, Cadets and Singh CC will do battle at Waipuna Park while Albion is at home at Fergusson Park to Mount Maunganui.

Saturday's WBOPCA Reserve Grade draw:
