The public has a chance to discuss concerns and issues related to the NZ Transport Agency's proposed design of a new Maungatapu underpass on Wednesday.
The underpass is proposed for the intersection of State Highway 29 and State Highway 2A.
An NZTA plan of the proposed Maungatapu underpass.
NZTA Bay of Plenty state highway manager Brett Gliddon says the information day is about teaching the public what the intersection will look like and how it will operate.
The underpass is intended to help freight move through the area more safely and efficiently.
It is also intended to provide a transport solution to manage the future traffic growth expected in the area.
'Providing safe and efficient access of freight to markets is vital to help our economy grow, and the NZTA has identified State Highway 29 as a strategic freight route for this region,” says Brett.
'Traffic modelling for the SH29/Hairini Link area has shown the future development at Tauriko and residential growth at Welcome Bay and Papamoa will cause the Hairini roundabout to experience delays during the morning and evening rush hour unless the intersection is upgraded.”
The Hairini Link – Maungatapu underpass public information day is at the Scout and Guide Hall, 39 Welcome Bay Road, 4-7.30pm on Wednesday, November 30.

Tolls

Will Tolls be imposed on the vehicle movements to & from Welcome Bay Road - seeing as this is not a state highway and theoretically under the jurisdiction of Tauranga City Council (the same as route K)?
Delayed

for so longi think i be dead by the time it is finished The Maungatapu/Welcome bay roundabouts were put there in place of interestions and was made for the fact a tunnel was on the plans, Now we have idiotic lights on roundabouts which is the most craziest thing ive ever seen next to Brookfield crazy setup, I will never support lights with roundabouts its one or the other but favour roundabouts moreso due to TCC inability to have any managment control on light phasing and maintenance
why not alternatives

Why not alternatives?

I for one hope I am dead by the time this goes ahead. To see what little green space is left at the beginning of WBay turned into a ghastly road, is heart breaking. I think it is incredibly selfish for everyone to think that you need more roads when you could all get out of your cars and use your body to get you places? Just twice a week or something? In the current financial crisis, why should money be spent on bigger roads? Why not spend it on enhancing cycle and pedestrian facilities? Oil is only going to get more expensive after all, and if you continue to drive everywhere, more money will be spent on you when you need healthcare that could have been prevented.
Put your brain in gear, THEN open mouth!

So nothingwrongwithgreen thinks "It is incredibly selfish for everyone to think that you need more roads when you could all get out of your cars and use your body to get you places? Just twice a week or something?" Guess I should just walk or ride a bike (with trailer for weeks groceries) to the Supermarket, walk the 10 km to Greerton Library. I must also allow an extra 2hrs a day travel to work ! "nothingwrongwithgreen" must work from a home with no children, have someone else deliver all their needs to the door, and live in LaLa Land. I suspect they suffer from the FITH syndrome.
The trouble is

it's clear that the NZTA are looking at the underpass from the point of view of through traffic on the state highway rather than that of welcome Bay residents. An underpass will just get us to the Hairini merge jam a bit quicker. In fact because cars will reach the pinch point quicker the jam will be massively bigger than it is now. The existing traffic lights work very well. Anyone that remembers the shambles of the pre-traffic light era will know what I mean. The holdup isn't for very long but it does allow some of the traffic to clear from the causeway area.
of course use your car xenaprincess...

Of course we must drive to get places, I accept that. And really 10k's? seriously- if you think 10 km's is a long way, you perhaps should "Put your brain in gear, THEN open mouth!"

I certainly hope you are not dead by the time this is built....supposed to be only a couple of years away.....I live in Hammond Street and I live in one of the houses that will be going.... I drove down to the hall today.....yes DROVE... I have emphysema and usually could cope with walking back up the hill, but NOT today as I have a chest infection, cant breath, have lost my voice (since Sat) etc but still wanted to see the information...Believe me there will still be green spaces in the entrance to Welcome Bay, just with a road through it AND we gain a POND.
