T20 cricket opens WBOP reserve grade season

The resumption of the Reserve Grade Twenty 20 Championship, will kick-start the new Western Bay of Plenty cricket season, at Gordon Spratt Reserve this Saturday.

Two pools of five, will contest the short and sharp version of the game, with the opening two rounds bringing all the teams together in a field-day at the largest green space in Papamoa.

The inaugural Western Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade T20, was held in 2012, with Mount Maunganui winning the first three all-action competition titles.

Cadets lifted the T20 trophy aloft in victory the last time the title was contested, before a logjam in the Western Bay Cricket calendar, saw the competition placed on hold for the last three seasons.

Early afternoon encounters see Mount Maunganui play Aquinas College and R&A Sangha, who have returned back into the Western Bay Cricket fold after missing the second half of last season, against Te Puke in Section One.

In Section Two, Greerton Sikh XI square off with Tauranga Boys College in the early afternoon action, while Katikati meet Cadets.

Greerton, who sat out the Section One first round bye, enter the fray against long-time rivals Mount Maunganui with Aquinas College meeting R&A Sangha.

The day will be rounded out with the round two clashes between Tauranga Boys College and Katikati and an Indian team derby between the Singh CC and the Greerton Sikh XI.
