Leaking substance at Port confirmed as water

The substance which was reported to be leaking from a container at the Port of Tauranga this afternoon, has been confirmed as water.

Emergency services were called to the port at about 1pm, following reports of a potential leak in a container carrying hazardous chemicals.

'Emergency services have established that there has been no leak,” says Port of Tauranga communications manager Rochelle Lockley.

'Fire crews were called after liquid was seen as the container was being unloaded but it has been identified as water.”

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern communications shift manager Daniel Nicholson says one person was also reported as feeling ‘nauseous' at the time however no one is reported to be injured.

'Staff working nearby were evacuated according to standard procedures and checked by ambulance officers as a precaution,” says Rochelle. 'Operations have returned to normal.”
