BOP U19s look real deal in Jock Hobbs tourney

Kaleb Trask converted 6 of the Bay under 19s’ 14 tries in their 90-0 hammering of Hawke's Bay

Bay of Plenty rugby's rampaging under 19 team have opened the Jock Hobbs Memorial tournament in Taupo with a staggering 90-0 demolition of Hawke's Bay, underlining their title-winning potential.

The baby Steamers were too slick for the overstressed Hawke's Bay defence touching down 14 times, including four to left winger Bartje Wierenga and two each to centre Lalomilo Lalomilo and halfback Leroy Carter.

National under 20 representative Kaleb Trask, who's on leave from the Steamers for the tournament, converted six of the tries, while Coby Miln added another four.

Bay of Plenty qualified as top seeds for the Chiefs region in the tournament, so earned the right to take on the second Hurricanes seeds Hawke's Bay in yesterday's Premiership division quarterfinal.

The team have been in free-scoring mood in the buildup to the tournament, thrashing Counties Manukau 60-17, Taranaki 94-0 and Waikato 36-17 in the seeding rounds.

Adding their Hawke's Bay blowout to the tally they have now scored 280 points in competition games while conceding just 34.

They're back in action again on Wednesday taking on Blues top seeds North Harbour, who had to work hard to get past Tasman 28-25.

Meanwhile, the Bay's under 18 side are also getting into the free-scoring groove with a 52-10 triumph over the Taranaki under 18s on the weekend.

Waikato proved too strong for the Volcanix in their Farah Palmer Cup clash in Matata, taking it out 44-7, but in the curtain-raiser to that match the Bay under 19 girls had better fortune defeating Waikato 29-10.

And the BOP under 15 boys went down to King Country's under 16s 31-26.

Jock Hobbs Memorial tournament Premiership quarterfinal:

Bay of Plenty 90 (Bartje Wierenga 4, Lalomilo Lalomilo 2, Leroy Carter 2, Coby Miln, Emoni Narawa, Jonas Pomare, Jayjay Suemai, Apitone Toia, Etonia Waqa tries; Kaleb Trask 6 con, Miln 4 con) Hawke's Bay 0
