Matthew Farquhar wins NZ secondary schools singles

17 year old Matthew Farquhar from Tauhara College.

Seventeen year old Matthew Farquhar from Tauhara College in Taupo, has won a gold medal.

He won the gold medal in the singles division of the New Zealand Indoor Bowls Secondary Schools Championships held at the North Wellington Indoor Bowls Hall on Sunday.

Last year Matthew won the silver medal in this event as well as the New Zealand Junior Singles title.

He has had a marvellous season winning his Bay of Plenty Gold Star and he will also get to represent his district at the Henselite Singles.

In the final, he defeated yesterday's New Zealand Singles champion Kaleb Johnston from Waimea College, who won the silver medal.

Johnston won the bronze medal last year.

The bronze medal winner this year was Blair Gowan from Feilding High School.

Sixty four players from secondary schools throughout the country entered the singles competition and 36 pairs will compete in the pair championship on Monday August 27.
