Baypark Speedway is enjoying a bumper season with records showing nearly a 50 per cent increase in driver numbers compared with the same time last year.
Speedway manager Roger Bailey says 121 local drivers have registered for this season's line up compared to 81 last year.
Action from Baypark this season.
'In addition, there have been up to 15 visiting drivers form other regions adding to the tally each meeting.
'It's great. Not only does it intensify the competition between drivers, but it adds huge value for the spectators who get to enjoy double the action.”
He says double the action is exactly what fans are getting so far with the first two races of the season.
'The previous meet on November 5 almost turned into a warm up for the forthcoming demolition derby.
'Auckland driver Craig Cardwell glanced off another competitor and somersaulted through turn one on the first super saloon race of the night.”
Roger says later on in the night, local driver Colin Entwistle overturned his sprint car on the front straight sustaining enough damage to retire the car for the night.
This Saturday will see the 10th anniversary season's demolition derby.
'One of the biggest drawcards of summer, the demo features a bang and bash of pre-loved vehicles aiming to be the last car standing.”
Gates open at 5pm with the first race scheduled for 7pm.

Should be free like the Art Gallery

Don't want to be a stirrer but as Council bought the Speedway for an undisclosed sum, shouldn't Speedway be free to get in? Thinking of the same arguments that get the art gallery a huge ratepayer subsidy. We don't want to deprive the poor of the ability to get in, people won't pay twice through their rates and and entry fee etc.

Ratepayers own the speedway facility and business, BUT the speedway activity is paying for it. I note that in the 'unlikely event' speedway management incur repeated financial losses (like Route K) it is the ratepayer who is liable. In stark contrast, our rates do meet the lion's share of the cost of most recreational facilities (incl. TECT Arena, Art Gallery, Baywave, etc by way of at least an 80% subsidy).
WELL DONE MURRAY!

Yes now isn't that the truth Murray '80% subsidy' across the board 'at least'. Like the poor old ratepayer is burdened with all these costs, debt and no way to pay, or seek compensation for the stress, mess, or redress ...

Great to see that the driver numbers are up, but is it not the paying public that pay to get in, should we not be reporting on sales and turn over, obviously someone is worried to put adult demo derby entry tickets up for half price on a voucher site The two meeting a year that pull the money are the fireworks meeting and the demo derby, so why are we discounting tickets to a meeting that has always been supported by the public in numbers, why not discount the less popular meeting to get people in the gate, seems that half price tickets to the demo is just giving money away
Does Cr. Murray Guy drive in Speedway

So how much has been borrowed in total to buy Baypark and Speedway and how much profit have the two made over the last year? Just trying to figure out why Cr Guy is justifying Council buying Speedway.
A RESIDENTIAL NUISANCE

Council should not be subsidizing this thing CR. Guy because don't you recall MAYOR CROSBY and his best buddy at the time CEO TOWN assured us in 2007 that the Baypark purchase would pay for itself. These dropkicks didn't even bother to get the 'cash cow' Speedway Operating Agreement so where was the income coming from- let me guess it was rating funds from the good old TCC Ratepayers. Anyway back to the Speedway the first 2 nights were spectator disasters. The quicker this place is taken over as a dedicated Rugby Stadium with an increased 25k to 30k capacity the better.Speedway can be shipped off to the award winning TECT Park site in the country best place for it too.
