JPC and RGHS take Baywide rugby crowns

John Paul College and Rotorua Girls High are champions of the Toi Ohomai Baywide Secondary Schools rugby competition after finals day victories at Rotorua International Stadium on Saturday, building up to the Bay of Plenty Steamers' Mitre 10 Cup launch.

The Rotorua college's first XV defeated Tauranga's Te Wharekura O Mauao 14-12 in the boys Division 1 final, raising the curtain on the Steamers' comprehensive 30-10 conquest of Taranaki.

Earlier the Baywide girls' first XV title went to Rotorua Girls with a 27-17 win over Tauranga Girls College.

Two schools from the extremes of Bay of Plenty rugby territory met in the Division 2 final, Tauhara and Katikati Colleges. The Taupo school took the title 29-24.

Tauranga Boys' College had success in the Under 15 Premiership final, defeating Taupo-Nui-a-Tia 44-7, while in other divisions titles went to Whakatane's Trident High in the Under 15 Championship with a win over John Paul College, and Tauranga Boys College White who defeated Rotorua Boys' High in the under 14s.
