A protester will appear in court after chaining herself to a gate near the mine site on Karangahake mountain.

A police media spokesperson says the 65-year-old woman was arrested and charged with obstruction.

According to a post on the Protect Karangahake Facebook page, business owner and grandmother Linda Gilmore chained herself to the gate in order to block mining vehicles from getting to the mine site.

Police received a number of calls from members of the public about the protest on Monday morning.

Police say there were about 12 protesters at the scene, but only one person was arrested.

Linda is due to appear in court in Waihi on August 20.
