A bus, believed to be carrying Tauranga Moana iwi members returning from Parliament this afternoon, has crashed near Sanson.

Ngai Te Rangi chief executive Paora Stanley says there have been reports of injuries and details are still coming through.

"People have been taken to Whanganui and Palmerson North Hospitals."

A police media spokesperson says there are about 28 people on board.

"The bus went into a ditch around 2.40pm.

"There are varying reports of injury statuses and at this stage the number of injuries has not been determined.

"Further information will be released when it becomes available."

The crash comes after a group of 30 Tauranga iwi members showed up, amongst many other iwi throughout the country, to show their opposition to the government signing the Pare Hauraki collective redress deed.
