A 49-year-old man has been charged after allegedly damaging election hoardings in Pāpāmoa this month.

Police were called to Pāpāmoa Beach Rd about 8pm on September 16 to reports of a man causing a disturbance near Bermuda St.

Senior Sergeant Shannon Clifford said officers arrived to find a man allegedly damaging election hoardings.

The man was arrested and charged with two counts of wilful damage.

He is due to reappear in Tauranga District Court on October 30.

The arrest is the second in recent weeks relating to damaged election hoardings in the Tauranga area.

A 43-year-old man is also due to reappear in court on October 2 facing four charges of wilful damage.

Clifford said police hoped the arrests would send a strong message that anyone who chose to damage election material would face the consequences.
